Kine Weekly told you “The new strong ‘crooks slide out’ is peopled which have a colourful range out-of essential and you may arresting characters, and these, skilfully manipulated from the copywriter and you will director, permit the film in order to tread drinking water effortlessly. It is simply into the wind up so it actually starts to fall apart, but the smack-right up finale rescues it on the ‘red’. Admirably staged and wisely dialogued, it has no high difficulty from inside the way of life down the extremely ugly title.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Motion picture Bulletin said “The film actions at the an easy rate, the brand new dialogue are advanced and characterisations basically energetic. Knob Powell and you may Evelyn Keyes direct the newest cast skillfully, since detective try used significant aplomb of the see your face identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody on New Yorker detailed “Which terse and you may tight film noir is predicated on the new intimate and you may professional conflicts of your label reputation, the newest criminal genius (played by the Dick Powell) at the rear of a classy unlawful casino. The fresh film’s blogger and you may director, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess games, getting mortal stakes, between Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Received), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and an excellent scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose sibling (Nina Foch) has worked at the gambling enterprise and you may old a great corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The newest caustically epigrammatic program, brand new cast’s suavely managed body language out-of like and you can possibility, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and stylishly cocky photos (along with their political conscience) get this pugnacious yet detailed spectacle an invisible classic of the category.” [ 10 ]

Pic possess actions and you can suspense, and certain short satisfies out-of laughs to provide taste. Ace activities by Penis Powell, while the a gaming domestic overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, as the an authorities inspector, plus in the rating . Whilst the patch uses a familiar pattern, the brand new characterizations was new and also the activities good enough so you can overbalance. Dialogue try terse and you can relevant, preventing the emotional, phoney reach. Strange digital camera bases come-along on occasion in order to intensify attract and you may briefly stop the attention. Good teamplay by Robert Rossen, increasing since manager-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, new creator and you may member manufacturer, together with supports making it a soft development.” [ 11 ]

It is generally an issue of watching Mr. Powell experience his paces smartly when you’re a large throw away from actors and you can performers bring your classic assistance. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable absolutely nothing woman just who brings forth new best in your and you may Ellen Received ‘s the easy and you will slinky vixen whom will get him into the jams. Thomas Gomez is greasy as the villain and Lee J. Cobb do a unique able journey due to the fact a tired police inspector just who fundamentally shuts the way it is. A great deal of sipping and you will smoking is done because of the most of the concerned.” [ several ]
